A sustainable past, present and future
As the first major tea company to make such a large-scale commitment to sustainable tea production, PG tips sets itself apart from other tea brands.
We run our own plantations where our commitment to creating a fairer world is there for all to see – from free housing to accessible medical care and education.
Sustainability isn’t new to PG tips. For over 15 years we’ve worked to ensure sustainable practices exist across our East African tea estates. In 1998 we developed our 10 sustainability indicators, covering social, economic and environmental factors. We followed this in 2002 with our sustainable agriculture guidelines, which approximately two thirds of our tea suppliers now meet.
The Rainforest Alliance
We wanted PG tips tea to be sustainably farmed, so we asked the Rainforest Alliance (a non governmental organisation) to help our suppliers become certified.
With a worldwide reputation for being an enlightened, independent organisation, the Rainforest Alliance has a wealth of experience in crops like coffee and fruit, and already works with other multi-nationals. Its rigorous certification process covers a wide range of social, economic and environmental factors, including water conservation, soil management, wildlife protection, fair treatment and good working conditions for workers.
